National car rental started on August 17, 1947 when 34 individual car rental companies brought together their 800 vehicles and 60 locations. They were able to establish themselves quickly as "the best in localized, personal service." National Car Rental was the first car rental company to provide one-way rentals for customers so they can rent a car at one location and drop it off at another location. They started this in 1954 and it took off. In 1987, National Car Rental was the first car rental company to offer a frequent traveler program, called the "Emerald Club" and they also started the "Paperless Express Rental Agreement." This was an agreement that they kept online and made getting the car rental quicker and easier. They were also the first to offer flat rates to their customers.
